Broaden Studies for a Minor or Even Major (Life) Change

Senior ICB students in Denver, who entered the program in 2009, are excitedly awaiting their upcoming May graduation. Most of them have studied on the downtown Denver campus for two years.  In 2011, the number of ICB students who came to Denver doubled the total number of Chinese students on the downtown Denver campus.

Also, as the new generation after 1990s, these students show more openness and acceptance to pioneer non-traditional academic areas, and try to follow with the multicultural American Zeitgeist.

Lingguang, an ICB alumna from the class of fall 2012, works as an intern for a Chinese investment company in Chengdu, Sichuan.  In contrast with most Chinese students who plan their academic and career goals way into the future, Lingguang seeks out engaging experiences today that will benefit her personally and/or professionally tomorrow.  And, since life is short, believes that students should avoid doing something that’s not of much interest to them.   She hopes to gain more career knowledge and enjoy travel with friends during this, her Chinese Zodiac year.

Faculty Profile: Alexander Engau on the Absolute Value of Math (and Bats)

Alexander Engau is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver. And is currently teaching as a visiting faculty member at ICB in Beijing. Having published in a number of international academic journals, his research focuses on the theory and methodology of mathematical programming, optimization, and decision making with a particular interest in interior-point methods and semidefinite relaxations for combinatorial optimization. In his spare time Alexander keeps busy with music, sports, and exploring the outdoors.

Yearning in Yunnan

Note:  Lijjie Lin, an ICB student in Beijing, accompanied a group of Christian volunteers to Yunnan province to observe the plight of displaced refugees from Kachin State in Myanmar (Burma).  This underreported crisis is the product of a civil conflict between the military forces of Myanmar and the Kachin Independence Army since June 2011, when a 17-year cease-fire broke down.  His reflections on what he saw follow. While on my way to the refugee camps, I first thought of my country’s apparent decision to pay scant attention to the refugees and the war.  But when I actually visited the Qie Qieba refugee camp and witnessed the harsh conditions there –lack of medicine, children begging for something to eat, crowds gathered together to pray for peace – I wanted to punch the whole world.
