Intercultural Club Beijing

On August 23rd, the ICB Club cooperated with International Students Inc. (ISI) in holding the “2013 Welcome Party for ICB Students” in Tivoli Turnhalle. This activity happens at the beginning of each new academic year. The ISI prepared Chinese traditional food for the ICB students and fun games to break the ice. The president of the ICB Club introduced the ISI leadership members and the calendar of events of this semester to the students.

The Tough Decision Young Chinese Women Face

Fanggu is a Chinese girl from a rural area. She made a studious attempt for a higher education and was successfully admitted to a university in Shanghai. After graduating, she took two years to look for any job opportunity that would allow her to stay in Shanghai, and finally landed a job in a small business paying a limited salary. Thanks to her excellent performance over the next three years, she became the department manager. However, these outstanding competencies also brought her the title of “Miss Independent” in the company. She was in an embarrassing situation such that male employees kept her at arm’s length, while other female employees were jealous of her promotion. Moreover, she was overwhelmed by the stress from her parents in rural China urging her to find a husband soon because she was already over 25 years old. Finally, Fanggu decided to resign her position and look for an easier job closer to her hometown so that she could create her own family to satisfy her parents. Read More

A Rip Roarin’ Good Time!

Forty-two students, including two PALs (Peer Advocate Leaders), and four staff hopped on board the motor coach bright and early the morning of Friday, October 25th, to begin an all-day adventure to Colorado Springs.  Qifeng Xu, an ICB alumnus studying for his master’s in marketing at the University of Colorado Denver Business School said, “The interesting ‘quiz’ that we had on the way to our destination helped me to learn some history events of Colorado.”

While attending a conference in Boston this July, Joanne Wambeke of International Colleges and Partnerships was overjoyed to reunite with three ICB alumni in the Boston area:  Yueran Wei, Xin Wang, and Jinghang Jia.  The group gathered in Boston’s China Town for an authentic Chinese meal (complete with chicken feet).  During her October vacation to the Washington, D.C. area, Joanne also reconnected with ICB alumna Fan Zhang.

“It was an excellent festival activity which exhibited some slices of Chinese students’ talents and skills, as well as facilitated communications between international students and locals,” expressed Dr. Stephen Hartnett, Department of Communication Chair.  He continued, “I was impressed that there were so many people gathering in the Turnhalle tonight to celebrate this traditional reunion day in China.” Professor Hartnett was not be the only one surprised by the grand Mid-Autumn Banquet on September 24th.
