International Student Receives Rosa Parks Award

On April 21, 2016, the University of Colorado Denver celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Rosa Parks Diversity Award, honoring staff, students and community members for their dedication to promoting diversity, inclusion, and unity. Among the six award recipients was Tayud Mongkolrat, a sophomore in anthropology, who was born in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

When Mongkolrat was a young teenager, his family moved to Colorado so that his mother could pursue a PhD in Special Education. Mongkolrat was somewhat familiar with social activism – several of his family members in Thailand had fought for the rights of social equality and religious diversity – but when he came to the United States, he gained a true understanding of what this meant.

What better way to enjoy making new friends from around the world, savor delicious teas and cookies, and learn how to say “hello” and “goodbye” in several languages (for example, “hello!”/English =”nĭ hăo!”/Chinese, “pirivet”/Russian, “namaste”/Hindi). Students from France to Japan to Vietnam Share Traditional Feast at CU Denver

A diverse group of international students from countries around the world – China, Nepal, Turkey, Thailand, Ukraine, France, Burundi, and Vietnam – joined faculty and American friends to celebrate a traditional American holiday feast at this year’s International Student Thanksgiving Lunch, hosted by the Office of International Affairs, University of Colorado Denver. The event, organized by Aditi Nigudkar, a graduate student at CU Denver’s Business School and student assistant in International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), gave students a chance to learn more about the history of the national holiday, socialize, and celebrate the season.

Students create ‘Cultural Awareness Certificate’

Their campus is a microcosm of the world, so a group of senior-seminar students decided to do something to celebrate and amplify CU Denver’s rich diversity.

“In our class we realized we all spoke multiple languages and had international travel backgrounds, so we decided to use that to connect international students with domestic students across campus,”

said Tess Farmer, a student in the University Honors and Leadership (UHL) capstone class. Farmer said the team initially struggled to come up with a project idea, but their shared global interest—and using it to encourage fellow students to check out the many cultural events on campus—gave them a strong focus. explained Husain Ashknani, a student from Kuwait enrolled in the pre-dentistry program at the University of Colorado Denver. He is now being joined at the university by other fellow students from Kuwait following the recent announcement by the Kuwait Cultural Office – Los Angeles that the University of Colorado Denver is a fully approved university recognized by the government of the State of Kuwait. A delegation of distinguished international visitors toured the University of Colorado Denver’s ESL Academy and Business School on February 16 to engage in lively rounds of questions and answers about industry-education innovation incubators, potential international educational partnerships, customized English language instruction, and many other topics. The guests included leadership from international universities and government agencies representing India, Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia, Philippines, Bangladesh, South Africa, Ghana, and Mexico. Learning About Smart Homes, Assistive Technologies, Robotics & Health Telematics

Through a collaboration between the Department of Bioengineering and the Office of International Affairs, University of Colorado Denver, five outstanding international students served as volunteer helpers and attended the 12th Annual International Conference on Smart Homes, Health Telematics, and Assistive Technology (ICOST) this summer. For eleven years, ICOST has been held in countries around the world – France (2003), Singapore (2004), Canada (2005), Northern Ireland (2006), Japan (2007), the United States (2008), France (2009), Korea (2010), Canada (2011), Italy (2012), and Singapore (2013; this was the first time that it has been held in Denver, Colorado.
