Tizai Mauto, PhD Candidate in Design and Planning, attended by invitation the Youth 21-Building for Change Global Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, March 15-18. The purpose was to find ways of bringing young people closer to the United Nations governing processes, in addition to looking at methods and models of youth engagement and participation in all important matters of governance.

CU Denver brings international students downtown to learn English

Layla Almitib has a baby on the way and plans for a PhD. Thanks to the new University of Colorado Denver ESL Academy, language won’t be a barrier to her future.
A native of Saudi Arabia, Almitib moved to Denver two months ago in order to take advantage of the biochemistry PhD program offered by the University of Colorado School of Medicine. In preparation for her graduate coursework, she’s studying ESL (English as a Second Language) at the academy, which opened downtown in Independence Plaza at 16th and Curtis Streets on Jan. 25.

The UCD ESL Academy encourages students to only use English, even when they’re conversing in social areas outside of the classroom. This helps students to become fully immersed in the language on a regular basis.

DENVER – The New Year as observed by many Asian cultures, including Chinese, Korean, Tibetan and others coincides with lunar cycles. For 2012, the Chinese New Year’s day was Jan. 23 with celebrations continuing for two weeks – also known as the Spring Festival – and ending with the Lantern Festival on Feb. 6. This year’s celebration marks the 4,710th year, and is the year of the dragon.

DENVER – The three main goals of the new ESL Academy at the University of Colorado Denver – to provide English language fluency, university degree preparation and a home away from home – were on full display Wednesday for the ESL Academy’s open house on the 16th Street Mall.

DENVER – Delegates from China’s Northeast Forestry University (NEFU) visited Denver Nov. 2-4 to meet with faculty and leadership in CU Denver’s College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS). Among various activities, the delegates participated in an event to formalize a new educational partnership by signing a Memorandum of Collaboration.
