International Student Receives Rosa Parks Award

On April 21, 2016, the University of Colorado Denver celebrated the 10^th anniversary of the Rosa Parks Diversity Award, honoring staff, students and community members for their dedication to promoting diversity, inclusion, and unity. Among the six award recipients was Tayud Mongkolrat, a sophomore in anthropology, who was born in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

When Mongkolrat was a young teenager, his family moved to Colorado so that his mother could pursue a PhD in Special Education. Mongkolrat was somewhat familiar with social activism – several of his family members in Thailand had fought for the rights of social equality and religious diversity – but when he came to the United States, he gained a true understanding of what this meant.

“I was excited to see two ‘lions’ dancing in front of my eyes; it made me feel like I was in China,”

said Yisi Lu, an International College Beijing (ICB) student who is currently studying at the University of Colorado Denver. She was joined by dozens of other CU Denver students and faculty at this year’s annual Spring Festival banquet, which was held on February 8^th. The event was hosted by the Intercultural Club Beijing.

The Spring Festival is one of the most important holidays celebrated in China, with more than 4,000 years of history. According to the lunar calendar, it signifies the end of the past year and the beginning of the new year.

CU Denver Student Hones Language Skills in Jordan

Did you know that the English words “sugar” and “cotton” come from Arabic? Although different languages may share similar words or derivatives, learning another language can still be challenging; Arabic, for example, takes an average of at least 88 weeks of classroom study for a native English speaker to acquire proficiency. To dive even further into learning Arabic, Aaron Ferencik, a senior at the University of Colorado Denver, took the plunge and spent a summer studying abroad at the Princess Sumaya University of Technology in Amman, Jordan.

“I decided to study abroad because I had been overseas before in the military and wanted to go back outside of the country. I also knew that I would not be able to advance my Arabic language skills as far if I did not go to the Middle East and study intensely among native speakers,” said Ferencik.

When Heun An received her undergraduate degree in International Relations from a university in her home country of Korea, she wondered what should be her next step. Heun was serious about developing a rewarding career in the computer industry and, at the same time, she felt a tug from her classically artistic side. While visiting her mother in China, where her mother was studying Chinese grammar, Heun received advice from “my mentor”, one of her mother’s American friends.

“My mentor encouraged me to visit Denver and feed my artistic passion,” said Heun. She researched universities online and decided that the University of Colorado Denver’s ESL Academy was indeed “where I needed to focus next.”

International Architecture Alumnus Leads Delegation to CU Denver

Your college years at the University of Colorado Denver can leave lasting impressions, rich in knowledge gained and friendships developed. More than 85,000 university alumni make their home in Colorado, throughout the United States, and in countries around the world. Recently, alumnus Rino Wickasono traveled almost 10,000 miles from his home in Jakarta, Indonesia, to visit his CU Denver alma mater and to learn the most recent best practices surrounding sustainable development. Wicaksono is the former Dean of Civil Engineering and Planning and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Indonesia Institute of Technology and is currently active as a lecturer; he is also a professional consultant for development acceleration for the Indonesian government and a significant number of provinces, cities, and regencies in Indonesia. Wicaksono earned his master’s in architecture in 1992 and his master’s in urban planning in 1993 at the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP), and received his PhD in Urban Regional Planning from the University of South Australia (UniSA), Adelaide, in 2004.

I came to the U.S.A. to broaden my experiences as well as advance my educational goals. I came to Colorado after earning my associate’s degree at Green River Community College in Washington. I didn’t know much about Colorado before coming here; my older brother helped me, he actually earned his degree and is working in Australia. I wanted the option to focus on refrigeration within my mechanical engineering major.
