Why did you want to enroll in enroll in the University of Colorado Denver?
I wanted to enroll at CU Denver, because as a former exchange student in this city, I fell in love with it and wanted to come back. The University of Colorado has a terrific reputation in the state of Colorado and what better campus to choose if not the one located at the heart of the capital? CU Denver has a beautiful campus with a wonderful location and nonetheless, it provides a great education.
CU Denver Alumna Empowers New Generation of Health Care Professionals
“What I have seen, even from only two years ago, is how young girls are believing more and more in their own abilities,” said Dr. Sharmila Anand, Managing Director for SEHPL in India. “When educators or family members give a ‘pat on the back’ to a child at the right time for a job well done, it can affect her for the rest of her life.”
Dr. Anand, who has given such congratulatory ‘pats’ to thousands of young women throughout her career as a social entrepreneur, doctor, and educator, was recently honored at the inaugural Annual Heroines of Health Awards ceremony at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. GE Healthcare and Women in Global Health joined together in bestowing the award to thirteen women from around the world who have been champions for improving global health for all areas of society.

Also dubbed “The Four-Minute Miracle”, the system incorporates high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts within short bursts of time to create maximum aerobic and anaerobic benefits. VO2 max, which is the measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense exercise, increases; resting metabolic rate after the exercise and glucose metabolism are also improved.
ESL Graduates Celebrate Success
What’s the first thing you do when you learn something new? Share it with a friend or family member. Lulu Alsalem, who graduated in 2016 from the ESL Academy, University of Colorado Denver, was pleased to discover how well the Academy had prepared her for university when she entered classes at CU Denver’s College of Engineering and Applied Science in Fall 2016. Naturally, she shared the good news with her younger brother, Doaij, who was living in Kuwait and interested in earning a dentistry degree in the United States. In May 2017, the siblings celebrated together, along with dozens of CU Denver friends, faculty, and staff, as Doaij and his Level 5 classmates graduated from the ESL Academy.
With “Diversity” strongly supported as a core value at the University of Colorado Denver, it’s no surprise that international students are quickly welcomed into an exciting array of events and programs specially designed to integrate internationals into life in the United States. Two of the most popular annual events, Spring Fling and Fall Fest, are a collaboration between student organizations, school departments and nonprofit and for-profit vendors; hosted by CU Denver, Metropolitan State University, and Community College of Denver.
ESL Academy Students & Denverites Enjoy Afternoon Festivities
“We have fun together when we celebrate our national holiday on February 25th; so we wanted to share it and enjoy the moment of having a smile on someone else’s face, too,” said Thamer Alshammri, a student in the ESL Academy, University of Colorado Denver. Along with his friends and classmates, Alshammri enjoyed distributing traditional Kuwaiti food, as well as American snacks, and extending global friendship to downtown Denver business and community neighbors throughout the afternoon.

Within your industry, what are some of your favorite areas of focus, and why?
I have a big passion for marketing research. Landing my first job in an online shopping startup opens a whole new perspective of marketing. It’s somewhat related to my degree but it also provides me with an opportunity to learn and grow. I am working as a content marketer. I usually apply marketing research knowledge to understand and find out what kinds of content online readers like. so that I can create appealing content for them.

Dr. Sharmila Anand, an alumna of the University of Colorado Denver, is a born social entrepreneur, doctor, and an inspired educator. Her collaborations nurture education and healthcare environments where people can reach their optimal potential as well as learn how to effectively serve the greater community.
“I’m from a family of medical professionals, and have always seen that it is good to serve people,” said Dr. Anand. “Healthcare and education go hand in hand. In educating a girl child, who in turn educates the children of the family, you have helped an entire nation.” She added, “And you are building national assets.”
CU Denver Study Abroad Is Within Your Reach
Studying abroad adds breadth and depth to a college student’s academic experience, however, fewer than 5% of the 300,000 students who study abroad are in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs. ESL Academy Teams With First-Year Freshmen at CU Denver
International students and first-year American college freshmen share many common concerns: acclimating to a new environment with high academic expectations, understanding campus and city resources, and polishing communication skills for success in the classroom and workplace. Members of the Office of International Affairs and faculty and staff at the University of Colorado Denver collaborate in creative ways to develop programs that help students make the transition from high school—or from another country.
“The ESL students and new freshmen all want to make friends and be part of our campus community while building social confidence,” explained Rebecca Fisher, ESL Specialist at the ESL Academy. “Based on their smiles and laughter, I think this class has been a great success; they have really honed their conversational skills while making new friends.”
