International Student Welcome Party
Students from countries as far away as India, China, Kyrgystan, Saudi Arabia, Finland, and Japan joined University of Colorado Denver faculty and staff to celebrate the start of a new school year at the Fall 2014 International Student & Scholar (ISSS) Welcome Party on September 4, hosted by International Student & Scholar Services, Office of International Affairs.
“The Best Teachers I Have Ever Had”
Quoting British mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, the Brazilian student took the microphone and spoke enthusiastically about knowledge gained and the value of others’ help in attaining success. The mood was celebratory, the setting was a festive luncheon event in honor of the BSMP (Brazil Scientific Mobility Program) Level 5 graduates of the ESL Academy; the day was a perfect, blue-sky Colorado Friday on August 15.
Learning About Smart Homes, Assistive Technologies, Robotics & Health Telematics
Through a collaboration between the Department of Bioengineering and the Office of International Affairs, University of Colorado Denver, five outstanding international students served as volunteer helpers and attended the 12th Annual International Conference on Smart Homes, Health Telematics, and Assistive Technology (ICOST) this summer. For eleven years, ICOST has been held in countries around the world – France (2003), Singapore (2004), Canada (2005), Northern Ireland (2006), Japan (2007), the United States (2008), France (2009), Korea (2010), Canada (2011), Italy (2012), and Singapore (2013; this was the first time that it has been held in Denver, Colorado.

Preparing International Students to Succeed in CU Denver Classrooms
Along with the excitement of this spring’s 2014 graduation week on the downtown campus of the University of Colorado Denver, another significant graduation is taking place at CU Denver’s ESL Academy. This May marks the 12th ESL Academy graduation since its founding in January 2012. Dozens of graduates of the ESL Academy have continued on into degree programs at the university, studying in disciplines ranging from architecture to engineering to public health.
ESL Academy Conversation Partners Learning & Fun for International & American Students
Lively conversations – spoken completely in English – are taking place every week between American and international students from around the world through the Conversation Partners Program at the ESL Academy, University of Colorado Denver. The program offers lunchtime and after-class discussion sessions for international students to practice and improve their English language skills as they enjoy learning with fellow students.

Successfully Transitioning International Students to CU Denver
The creation of an environment that fosters academic success for international students poses unique challenges; but then, international students at the University of Colorado Denver bring notable qualities to meet these challenges. Patricia Mathews, an ESL Specialist at the CU Denver ESL Academy who also taught at the university’s International College Beijing, observed parallels in the dedication and focus of students at the ESL Academy and ICB.
ESL Academy Co-hosts Educational Event in Downtown Denver
Contemporary Korean topics such as concerns over relationships with China and Japan, an assessment of the impact of the Korean-U.S. Free Trade Act, and the potential for an increase in the Korean High Technology Visa currently being discussed in the U.S. Congress were all part of a lively presentation and discussion held at the University of Colorado Denver’s ESL (English as a Second Language) Academy on Friday, February 14.
Scholarship Program Opens Doors for STEM Studies
Through the respected Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP), a scholarship program funded by the Brazilian government and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), exceptional students are entering spring classes at the ESL Academy. Their areas of study in Brazil are civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, architecture, and pharmacy.
