Latin American Student Finds Great Educational Resources at University of Colorado Denver
Immersion in a quality English language program and immersion in a top-ranked business school and thriving business community formed the perfect combination for Brazilian student Gabrielle Mattioda. Mattioda, one of the first students in class on the opening day of the University of Colorado Denver ESL Academy, is pursuing her MBA in the university’s Business School and enjoying life in Colorado.
Intercultural Club Beijing

On August 23rd, the ICB Club cooperated with International Students Inc. (ISI) in holding the “2013 Welcome Party for ICB Students” in Tivoli Turnhalle. This activity happens at the beginning of each new academic year. The ISI prepared Chinese traditional food for the ICB students and fun games to break the ice. The president of the ICB Club introduced the ISI leadership members and the calendar of events of this semester to the students.

George Wang, associate professor of economics and academic director of the ICB program in Beijing, achieved multiple academic degrees and gained abundant occupational experiences before beginning his teaching career. As an international scholar, Professor Wang has years of experience teaching international students: from Canada, China, India, Taiwan, Vietnam and also the United States.
A Rip Roarin’ Good Time!

Forty-two students, including two PALs (Peer Advocate Leaders), and four staff hopped on board the motor coach bright and early the morning of Friday, October 25th, to begin an all-day adventure to Colorado Springs. Qifeng Xu, an ICB alumnus studying for his master’s in marketing at the University of Colorado Denver Business School said, “The interesting ‘quiz’ that we had on the way to our destination helped me to learn some history events of Colorado.”
The University of Colorado Denver’s downtown campus graduate division has received an all-time record number of more than 1,000 international student applications for Fall 2013 admission. Offers of admission and overall enrollment trends are also increasing.
Mid-Autumn Banquet Held by ICB Club

“It was an excellent festival activity which exhibited some slices of Chinese students’ talents and skills, as well as facilitated communications between international students and locals,” expressed Dr. Stephen Hartnett, Department of Communication Chair. He continued, “I was impressed that there were so many people gathering in the Turnhalle tonight to celebrate this traditional reunion day in China.” Professor Hartnett was not be the only one surprised by the grand Mid-Autumn Banquet on September 24th.
Maymester Abroad Program Provides Access to High Profile Business Venues and Influential Business People
A new semester has started at the University of Colorado Denver, and for many international students, the summer of 2013 was one of their best in memory. Just ask Mihir Rathod. A graduate student from India who’s studying information systems, Rathod wisely chose an elective class that provided access to business venues and influential business people in one of his favorite cities—London.
CU Denver and Ecologic Institute Sign Agreement for Semester-long Study Abroad Program
On August 12, an agreement between the University of Colorado Denver and the Ecologic Institute of Berlin formalized the start of a new semester-long program of applied research: Sustainability in Berlin. The MOU (memorandum of understanding) was signed by university representative Provost Roderick Nairn and R. Andreas Kraemer, Founding Director of Ecologic Institute of Berlin.
The University of Colorado Denver was one of three American institutions visited by a seventeen member educational delegation sponsored by the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), China’s professional association focused on the internationalization of Chinese higher education that conducts international educational exchanges and cooperation. The delegation, comprised of high-ranking officials and faculty members from eleven different Chinese institutions, arrived on the CU Denver and Anschutz Medical Campus on May 31 with the goal of exploring a variety of educational partnership options.
Gilman Scholarship Winner Stella Yuan
Growing up in Colorado, Stella Yuan experienced not only American culture, but also the cultural influences of her family’s Japanese heritage. Speaking Japanese with her family members was an everyday conversational practice; but she still wished to learn even more about the country, the people, and the complex written system of the language. To accomplish this, Yuan decided to break free from her comfort zone in Denver, and pursue Japanese linguistic studies in the busy capital city of Tokyo, Japan.
