The University of Colorado Denver was one of three American institutions visited by a seventeen member educational delegation sponsored by the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), China’s professional association focused on the internationalization of Chinese higher education that conducts international educational exchanges and cooperation. The delegation, comprised of high-ranking officials and faculty members from eleven different Chinese institutions, arrived on the CU Denver and Anschutz Medical Campus on May 31 with the goal of exploring a variety of educational partnership options.
Gilman Scholarship Winner Stella Yuan
Growing up in Colorado, Stella Yuan experienced not only American culture, but also the cultural influences of her family’s Japanese heritage. Speaking Japanese with her family members was an everyday conversational practice; but she still wished to learn even more about the country, the people, and the complex written system of the language. To accomplish this, Yuan decided to break free from her comfort zone in Denver, and pursue Japanese linguistic studies in the busy capital city of Tokyo, Japan.
As an international student earning his PhD in civil engineering at the University of Colorado Denver, Rui Liu remembers encountering many difficulties in 2007, mainly due to language barriers and having to acclimate to a different culture. He credits his mentors in the College of Engineering and Applied Science and the staff at International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), Office of International Affairs, with helping him to overcome those obstacles quickly.

For Hassan Alzamzam, his academic journey may have brought him halfway across the globe, but his research and determination have earned him recognition on a scale that extends beyond the classroom.
On April 27, 2013, ICB Economics students Jialin Cheng, Qiaoyue Liang, and Jiexin Yue took part in a tree-planting volunteer service activity in the Hayman burn area in the Front Range mountains southwest of Denver. University of Colorado Denver Honors and Leadership (UHL) program sponsored the planting, which turned out 36 students along with two parents and two supervisors.

A desire to learn about—and in—a completely different culture led Nancy Tran from her home in Denver to her graduation walk on the ceremonial stage at International College Beijing, China. Tran had been a student teacher at an international studies school in Denver and her talks with high school students who had studied overseas inspired her to, in her words, “broaden my views and perspective on the world”.
