ESL Academy Co-hosts Educational Event in Downtown Denver
Contemporary Korean topics such as concerns over relationships with China and Japan, an assessment of the impact of the Korean-U.S. Free Trade Act, and the potential for an increase in the Korean High Technology Visa currently being discussed in the U.S. Congress were all part of a lively presentation and discussion held at the University of Colorado Denver’s ESL (English as a Second Language) Academy on Friday, February 14.
Study Abroad Student Prepares for Career as Bilingual Therapist

Inspired by her goal of becoming a bilingual therapist and by her twin brother, who had studied in Chile, University of Colorado Denver student Hannah Jeanicke took a bold step in perfecting her Spanish language skills through studies in a Latin American country.
Scholarship Program Opens Doors for STEM Studies
Through the respected Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP), a scholarship program funded by the Brazilian government and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), exceptional students are entering spring classes at the ESL Academy. Their areas of study in Brazil are civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, architecture, and pharmacy.
Presidential Scholar Award Goes To Two Outstanding International Students
The Presidential Scholar Award was developed by former University of Colorado Denver President Hank Brown to identify and recognize outstanding students in the freshman class. Award recipients receive $2,500 USD toward tuition that recurs for eight (8) semesters, totaling $20,000 USD. They must maintain a 3.2/4.0 GPA. The University of Colorado Denver aspires to recruit academically talented international students from diverse geographic regions who will contribute to the university community; the Presidential Scholar Award helps to make this goal a reality.

Ashanthi Maxworth, Sri Lanka
University of Colorado Denver PhD student, Ashanthi Maxworth, student has been awarded the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) Life Member Graduate Study Fellowship in Electrical Engineering, which carries a $10,000 per year stipend paid. Maxworth completed her BS at the University of Moratuwa, which is the top technical university in Sri Lanka.
(IEEE is a professional organization that creates an environment where members collaborate on world‐changing technologies – from computing and sustainable energy systems, to aerospace, communications, robotics, healthcare, and more.)

Junfei Tian, a senior at the University of Colorado Denver majoring in communication and minoring in art and creative writing, reflected on life in Denver and remembered the first time she arrived in the United States. “I came here because it’s a land of possibilities. I really like this country.”
Latin American Student Finds Great Educational Resources at University of Colorado Denver
Immersion in a quality English language program and immersion in a top-ranked business school and thriving business community formed the perfect combination for Brazilian student Gabrielle Mattioda. Mattioda, one of the first students in class on the opening day of the University of Colorado Denver ESL Academy, is pursuing her MBA in the university’s Business School and enjoying life in Colorado.
Intercultural Club Beijing

On August 23rd, the ICB Club cooperated with International Students Inc. (ISI) in holding the “2013 Welcome Party for ICB Students” in Tivoli Turnhalle. This activity happens at the beginning of each new academic year. The ISI prepared Chinese traditional food for the ICB students and fun games to break the ice. The president of the ICB Club introduced the ISI leadership members and the calendar of events of this semester to the students.

George Wang, associate professor of economics and academic director of the ICB program in Beijing, achieved multiple academic degrees and gained abundant occupational experiences before beginning his teaching career. As an international scholar, Professor Wang has years of experience teaching international students: from Canada, China, India, Taiwan, Vietnam and also the United States.
