Students create ‘Cultural Awareness Certificate’
Their campus is a microcosm of the world, so a group of senior-seminar students decided to do something to celebrate and amplify CU Denver’s rich diversity.
“In our class we realized we all spoke multiple languages and had international travel backgrounds, so we decided to use that to connect international students with domestic students across campus,”
said Tess Farmer, a student in the University Honors and Leadership (UHL) capstone class. Farmer said the team initially struggled to come up with a project idea, but their shared global interest—and using it to encourage fellow students to check out the many cultural events on campus—gave them a strong focus.
Inaugural Event Focuses on Global Engagement for Denver Communities
“I think this is a great adventure that we are launching tonight,”
announced Don Elliman, CU Anschutz Chancellor at the inaugural University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus Global Crossroads event, hosted by the Office of International Affairs. The event, which will be hosted yearly, brought together leaders from the Denver business community and Colorado government, members of international organizations, and members of the university to dialogue, network, and enjoy an informative panel discussion surrounding global engagement. The panelists’ topics focused on fostering internationalization and sustainable growth of industry and education sectors in Denver and the growth of Colorado’s economy; updates were also shared about the multi-faceted ways that the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus, a major public urban research university, plays a strong supporting role.
The nine students who participated in the inaugural semester of the University of Colorado Denver’s Sustainability in Berlin program last fall are back home, empowered with a new perspective on themselves and the world we live in. For these students, the semester-long program was an informative learning experience, offering both theoretical and practical lessons on sustainability. The students completed two courses focusing on issues of sustainability, participated in internships facilitated through a partnership with the renowned Ecologic Institute, and adapted to daily life in Berlin, a global capital and living classroom of sustainability.

Why did you want to enroll in enroll in the University of Colorado Denver?
I heard about this college as a senior, I had some friends who were studying at the university. I did some research because I was still not sure about the university – it was totally new environment for me. I discovered that it is one of the best universities in Colorado and they have experienced and friendly professors. The atmosphere of the university is really awesome, people over here are very friendly. You do not feel like an outsider. It’s a quite amiable and cordial place to be and to study.

The Value of a Global Education
“Having a global education and understanding others will help you to communicate better, to be more open-minded,”
explained Husain Ashknani, a student from Kuwait enrolled in the pre-dentistry program at the University of Colorado Denver. He is now being joined at the university by other fellow students from Kuwait following the recent announcement by the Kuwait Cultural Office – Los Angeles that the University of Colorado Denver is a fully approved university recognized by the government of the State of Kuwait.
ISSS Hosts Festive December Event
Conversations and congratulations flowed freely at this year’s December Semester Celebration for international students hosted by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). Students from countries throughout the world were acknowledged for their accomplishments at the University of Colorado Denver by ISSS staff and academic advisors from the Business School, College of Engineering and Applied Science, and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
As thousands of students are entering fall classes at the University of Colorado Denver, nine CU Denver students are stepping into classrooms at Germany’s distinguished Ecologic Institute for the university’s new partnership program, Sustainability in Berlin. The program provides an opportunity for students to study and research global challenges and solutions relevant to developing sustainable environments while they earn CU Denver credit hours and participate in internships.
“Learning a language is a process; it starts when you are born and we build skills,” said Antonio Sermao, an ESL Academy graduate and student at the College of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Colorado Denver. “The ESL Specialists taught me how to support developing the language by myself.”
International Student Welcome Party
Students from countries as far away as India, China, Kyrgystan, Saudi Arabia, Finland, and Japan joined University of Colorado Denver faculty and staff to celebrate the start of a new school year at the Fall 2014 International Student & Scholar (ISSS) Welcome Party on September 4, hosted by International Student & Scholar Services, Office of International Affairs.
